reuben vision school

mukuru is not the first slum i've been to

but the smells and sights are similar all over the world:

people living in shit (literally)

filthy children playing in dirt

people struggling to earn ANY money

but still the people there are humans with dignity and often with big smiles given out freely.

after some familiarisation with the area, we set up shop in the reuben vision school, next to one of the bio sanitation centres (clean toilets and showers with recyclable waste that's taken away every two hours, by hand: man and cart)

oxfam supports these centres which have almost eradicated cholera and other life threatening diseases in the surrounding areas.

i'm out here trying to do some punchy (NOT documentary) pictures that support the clean water initiatives, with the help of the children enlisted to pose for some portraits.

on the way out of makuru, we avoided the policeman, arresting someone for something, who was waving his handgun around with carefree abandon.

the rush hour traffic (from 4pm to 8pm) in nairobi is horrendous: 2.5-3hrs to go 12km

i could definitely walk quicker

and it would be safer too: there were accidents all over the place.

including a crunch between a lorry and one of our cars with our camera gear and translators in it.
